2015 has proved to be a monumental year for the Maker Movement.  With increasingly more schools committed to creating a genuine and committed culture of innovation, we are seeing  more opportunities than ever for learners to be able to invent, tinker, create, innovate, make, and do. The continuing establishment of physical makerspaces in schools have …

This week, we built a game board which you can customize to play marbles, skittles, carrom, billiards, pool, shuffleboard, crokinole and more! My game board features two games, marbles and carrom.  Marbles has been played for thousands of years in various forms.  Carrom is a “strike and pocket” game that evolved in East India.

Beginning a Makerspace in our library has been a goal of mine for awhile. I'd had the start of one here and there with minor efforts, but after reading about other makerspaces and the possibilities, I knew I wanted to try something more substantial. I worried about the details. What if I didn't have everything? What if I did it wrong?

The Orchard School Library has a fabulous makerspace! This is a collaborative learning space for students to think, create, share and grow. "Science is about wonder and risk and imagination, not checklists or vocabulary memorization." - Gary Stager and Sylvia Martinez. Our library makerspace is a place for students to dream, to wonder, to take risks and to exercise their creativity. With the right tools, the possibilities are limitless.

make 4 change
Making 4 Change [M4C] is an equity-oriented makerspace, a place where people come together to design and build personally meaningful projects. M4C is unique in that it merges makerspaces with community ethnography, and serves youth from non-dominant communities in Boys and Girls Clubs [BGC] in Michigan and North Carolina. We seek to address the equity-related challenges discussed in our previous blog post, make room for cultural repertoires of practice, sustained engagement towards deeper understandings, more complex designs and distributed networks of expertise.

Youtube user Hknssn built a paper airplane-making machine using legos. As a last step, it launches the airplanes — a compressor shoots them about 2-3 meters off-camera — but you might have to watch the launch more than once. It happens fast!
Starting an after-school maker club can help draw kids into your makerspace and get them engaged in tinkering, especially in schools that aren’t quite ready to integrate making into their curriculum.
Elevate learning to a higher level and boost engagement in project-based learning through awarding badges for mastery of makerspace skills.
